The strong but static Louis Kahn inspired “circle-within-a-square” form of this circa 1960 facility created a challenging problem for the designers concerning its expansion. The design program involved the addition of an administrative wing to a distinctive, modern style structure with strong architectural lines. Our design strategy created a “friendly” new neighbor on the earthen platform mounded as a base for the original structure; thereby preserving the integrity of the strong existing building form. The rhythms of the existing building were used in a more contemporary fashion, with a continuous glass-walled corridor to allow natural light into every interior space. The renovation included all interior spaces and the building envelope for better mechanical performance, and increased natural light. The commitment of the UUCA to the preservation of its environment – as an expression of their faith – inspired the inclusion of a number of sustainable design features into the project.
