The educational theme of “A School within a School”, generated the form of this new prototypical Cobb County Middle School. The compactness of the plan not only reduces student walking distances, but also enables the facility to be constructed on a smaller plot of land. Identity of the focal point of the plan is strengthened by the unique curvilinear treatment of the central space of “crossing” of the circulation system. The 1,200 +/- full time enrollment school is provided with a 450 seat working performance arts hall, main and auxiliary gym with a prominent media center that is washed in natural lighting and views and a cafeteria that is broken into two distinct areas for better student control and observation.
